Kindergarten to Grade 6 at Rundle College
K-6 at Rundle
Rundle’s program adheres to Alberta curriculum standards and also embraces the value of elevated learning for all students. An energetic and dedicated team of educators provides a dynamic and challenging program fostering the intellectual, social, and personal development of all young students.
Small classroom environments engage students in their learning, provide more meaningful classroom discussion, and develop a closer connection to their teachers who are committed to students’ academic and personal success.
Sparking Imagination and Achievement with Academics

Students in kindergarten to grade 6 are taught the demanding Alberta academic curriculum, which is balanced and further enriched with a variety of experiences in music, languages, technology, physical education and fine arts. Field trips, guest presenters, and artist residencies contribute to a busy and fulfilling school life for our students.
Educational foundations are built through the younger grades so that our students are prepared for the rigours of our high school program, which has consistently been ranked as one of the top private schools in Alberta.
Art and music are part of the curriculum at Rundle in the primary and elementary years. Our young artists start building their fine motor skills through art as a creative outlet for self-expression while also exposing students to tried-and-tested techniques. Art projects are often integrated with music or French for special cross-disciplinary lessons.
In music class, students build a strong foundation for understanding and experiencing the fundamentals of music — rhythm, melody, harmony, expression, and movement. Considerable time is spent discovering singing voices, dancing, and playing musical games.
Choir and Drama Club provide our students even more opportunities to develop and showcase their talents. The primary goal of our fine arts program is to get students comfortable singing and performing with their peers.
K-6 students are given foundational knowledge on how to use technology and an understanding of its applications in the real world. By integrating aspects of coding and robotics into the K-6 classrooms, we strengthen our students’ computational and critical thinking aptitude. Students are asked to think like citizen data scientists and technologists and engage in global research. As they progress in the K-6 program, students are introduced to problem-solving through design thinking and given elevated opportunities to design, build, and test technological solutions for real-world challenges.

Shaping Integrity through Character & Leadership

At Rundle College primary and elementary, our character education program is called Mountains of Character. We have taken our Rundle values of Together: Be Kind, Be Curious, Be Well and incorporated other character traits that we feel are important to develop at this age. The six Mountains of Character traits are: curiosity, perseverance, gratitude, wellness, kindness, and integrity.
In the primary program, teachers are encouraged to share stories and picture books on the relevant character word. During monthly school assemblies, the character trait for that particular month is highlighted with a video, song, or other visual presentation. Teachers are encouraged to hold class meetings to build community, teach conflict resolution, and problem solve. Each month selected students are recognized and celebrated for their outstanding character. They are honoured as a Character Climber with a picture and a personalized write-up posted in the hallway.
In the elementary program, we recognize students who have demonstrated the Mountains of Character traits in their daily lives. Also, each term, students are given a challenge that they can work on at home. For example in term one the students are given a STEAM challenge which coincides with our curiosity trait. Students displaying considerable character receive certificates at monthly assemblies
Outdoor education, field trips, and travel enrich the learning experience and are an extension of Rundle’s academic and co-curricular programs.
At the primary level, students participate in multiple local field trips. Visiting places such as the Bow Habitat Station and the Leighton Art Centre enhance units of study and provide opportunities to explore the community beyond the classroom.
In the elementary program, students continue to enjoy local field trips to WinSport and Telus Spark, but also participate in overnight trips to the Bennett Centre in Edmonton, sleeping with the dinosaurs in Drumheller, and an exciting trip to Ottawa.
Our outdoor education program allows students to participate in unique experiences such as camping, cross-country skiing, dog sledding, and snowshoeing.
At the primary and elementary levels, students develop their character and leadership skills through numerous service learning opportunities. Rundle partners with many local programs in the community such as:
- Adopt-a-Family at Christmas
- Food drive for the veterans around Remembrance Day
- Sandwich making for the Drop-In Centre
- UNICEF
- Kids Care Club – Wentworth Manor

Do Rundle students wear a uniform?
Yes, here at Rundle we encourage your child’s individuality to shine through their actions, behaviours and thoughts. Fostering a sense of school pride and instilling a sense of responsibility for their attire, your child’s attention is free from distractions and focused on their academics and character building while wearing the Rundle uniform. See our detailed uniform requirements.
What are your parent volunteer expectations?
Parent volunteering within our school supports our programs and further enriches and strengthens our Rundle College community.
