About Us

Who We Are

Rundle is a private day school founded in 1985 by Dr. W. J. Collett and Dr. Rodney Conklin. It provides an outstanding educational experience for over 1,200 students in kindergarten through grade 12. In addition to high academic achievement, Rundle’s programs emphasize character development, leadership training, and good citizenship. Small class sizes, dedicated teachers who are committed to making a difference in the lives of individual children, and reasonable tuition are attributes that uniquely define Rundle College Society.

Rundle reports to and is thoroughly inspected by Alberta Education. It is a registered private school under Alberta’s School Act and accountable to Alberta Education in delivering the provincial curriculum. All of our teachers are certified by Alberta Education and have earned their degrees, including some graduate degrees. We are proud of our faculty and staff professional development program and are confident that we have some of the finest teachers in Canada.

Rundle’s College Campus offers a traditional yet dynamic K–12 learning experience. Rundle Academy offers a personalized program for students in grades 4-12 with diagnosed learning disabilities with or without ADHD. Rundle Studio follows the same exceptional model as the Academy program providing a virtual program for students in grades 7-9 with diagnosed learning disabilities with or without ADHD.

Each program has its own unique environment in a small school community where every child is encouraged and where all achievements are recognized and celebrated.

As members of Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS), Rundle College Society meets the highest national standards in all aspects of programs and operations. Our school is committed to providing an unmatched educational experience.

The excellence of Rundle College has been repeatedly recognized by independent organizations such as the Fraser Institute, which consistently ranks Rundle College as a top private school in Alberta.

Independent School in Calgary | K-12 Private Schools in Calgary | Gary Sylvan - Head of OperationsGary Sylvan | Head of Operations

A native Calgarian, Gary taught in Japan for two years before launching into a career with Rundle that has spanned the last 30 years. Impressively, Gary holds the record for having more positions at Rundle than anyone else! Starting in his early years as (1) a Rundle College social studies teacher, Gary’s role evolved into (2) a decade-long duty as the school counsellor for the Rundle College. Gary then shifted into administration as (3) an Assistant Principal at Rundle College and then (4) at Rundle Academy, a school for students with diagnosed learning disabilities. At the Academy campus, Gary led school admissions and learned extensively about complex learners and ADHD, embracing the program that enables these students to thrive. Gary returned to the Rundle College campus as (5) Principal of the Jr Sr High School, and two years later became (6) the Assistant Head of School, supporting the Principals in academics and operations in each of the schools. Finally, with the expansion of the Heads positions at Rundle, Gary jumped into the (7) Head of Operations role.

Over the decades, Gary’s most important position of all has been his role in his family. Gary and his amazing wife Tannis were blessed to have their two children thrive at Rundle and graduate in 2022 and 2024. If you’re ever looking for Gary, check his favourite places to be: exploring the great outdoors, smashing on the judo mat, or wandering the streets of Tokyo.
